Molasses Cookies

It's getting to be baking time again. This is a recipe that I make over and over again, every year, and never seem to have enough of during the holiday season. They disappear almost as fast as I can make them. It is a recipe that I received from my very longest friend, Natalie. Thanks, Nat. It's the family favorite.

Molasses Cookies

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup shortening (not butter or margarine!)
1/4 cup light molasses
1 egg

Sift dry ingredients together. Combine sugar and shortening in mixer until well combined. Add molasses and egg. Add dry ingredients. Refrigerate dough 1 hour. Scoop dough (I use a cookie scoop, really). Roll in sugar. Place on baking sheet and bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes. Yummy.

  1. I'm making molasses cookies tomorrow for my moms' circle meeting. Your recipe looks just like my mom's, but the technique looks a teeny bit different. Maybe I'll make the combined effort!

  2. What is the technique difference? I know your mom makes great molasses cookies, just never had the recipe.

  3. I think hers use brown sugar and are baked at a lower temp for a longer time. Will have to double check. Making them today, though!
